The SAJ Story
The Salvation Army was founded by William and Catherine Booth in 1865 and has been in New Zealand since 1883.
In the early 1990’s, a small group of members began to meet in the northern suburbs and plan for a future Salvation Army Corps (church). Full-time leaders (Andy & Yvonne Westrupp) were appointed and The Salvation Army Johnsonville started its first church service in September 1995. From these first services held at the Johnsonville Community Centre Hall, the church has grown. The current complex was purchased in 1998 and adapted for use over succeeding years. It was officially opened in November 2000.
We’ve always had a focus on offering a relaxed, contemporary service for families. In The Salvation Army, it is normal for church leaders to move around between churches. Our current leader, Mat Badger, joined our church at the start of 2024.

The Salvation Army's
Eleven Articles of Faith
Reflecting our determination to remain faithful to our standards and principles
The Salvation Army Doctrines
· We believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments were given by inspiration of God and that they only constitute the
Divine rule of Christian faith and practice.
· We believe that there is only one God, who is infinitely perfect, the Creator, Preserver, and Governor of all things, and who is the
only proper object of religious worship.
· We believe that there are three persons in the Godhead - the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost, undivided in essence and
co-equal in power and glory.
· We believe that in the person of Jesus Christ the Divine and human natures are united, so that He is truly and properly
God and truly and properly man.
· We believe that our first parents were created in a state of innocency, but by their disobedience they lost their purity and
happiness, and that in consequence of their fall all men have become sinners, totally depraved, and as such are justly exposed to the wrath of God.
· We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ has by His suffering and death made an atonement for the whole world so that
whosoever will may be saved.
· We believe that repentance towards God, faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, and regeneration by the Holy Spirit, are necessary to salvation.
· We believe that we are justified by grace through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and that he that believeth hath the witness in himself.
· We believe that continuance in a state of salvation depends upon continued obedient faith in Christ.
· We believe that it is the privilege of all believers to be wholly sanctified, and that their whole spirit and soul and body may be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
· We believe in the immortality of the soul; in the resurrection of the body; in the general judgement at the end of the world; in the eternal happiness of the righteous; and in the endless punishment of the wicked.

Serving
Volunteers are the heartbeat of our church. We invite you to be a part of the journey as we reach and influence our community. Serving is a great
way to feel like you belong and we encourage all people to find an area to serve within. There’s a wide range of opportunities for serving, such as
being a greeter, serving morning tea, helping on the sound desk, leading a small group, and teaching children.
We'd love for you to become involved in our church and take part in growing the 'Kingdom of God' here on Earth. Check out some of the team on this page.

Our desire and passion is to help each and every person who calls The Salvation Army Johnsonville home to come to have a deeper, intimate relationship with Jesus through prayer.
Our weekly prayer meetings run on a Tuesday Morning at 8.30am and on a Sunday morning before church at 9.25am. Anyone is welcome. Once a year, we also have a full week of dedicated 24-7 prayer. We have a team of people dedicated to praying for your specific prayer requests. If you have a prayer request, you can email us by the 'Contact Us' box at bottom of the page. All requests are kept confidential. |
